Day Two: Park Tunnel Art, Myth Writing, and more!

Dear Elm Tree Poetry families,

We started the day by playing an improv and name game. Sally told "a storm story" and the children each contributed by making the sounds. We used our names to practice rhyming and learned about slant rhymes, which are made using similar, but not identical, sounds.

Then we collected natural objects (leaves, sticks, flowers, acorns) and "trash" to use for collaging later in the afternoon.

We sat down near the tunnel by the Grand Army Plaza entrance to Prospect park and read "Wish Poems" written by children in Kenneth Koch's Wishes, Lies, and Dreams. The children brainstormed a few of their personal wishes. We talked about how a poem consists of lines that often do not end in periods (the difference between a line and a sentence). We were inspired by another poet who wrote their poem on the tunnel wall using chalk and wrote our own "Wish Poems" in the tunnel. Here are few photos of the children's work:

Then we went to the Natural Playground and explored the tree trunk, stumps, and hanging branch area. The children also made a joint sand birthday cake. We made new friends again!

During lunch, we read Catwings by Ursula K. Le Guin. The children loved how the cats acted like people. After packing up lunch, we sat on Romy's tapestry and used the objects we collected in the morning to create collages. We talked about reusing trash to make art instead of putting it in the trash can. Some children even used plastic from their lunches! Here are their final art pieces:

We finished off the day by reading Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears by Verna Aardema. The myth form acted as inspiration as we created our own stories and illustrations about the clouds and park. Below you'll find the Elm Tree children at work/ their writing and art pieces:
